A THEORY ANDON LY A THEORY I believe that Martin Sheets had 2 brothers living near him in Rowan County, Jac ob Sheets and John Sheets. Jacob died May 2, 1818, leaving aWill. His wife Mary and childre n: David, Jacob, Mary, Nancy, Chesher, and Margaret. John died March 20, 1810 leaving a Wi ll. Rebecca, his wife, and children: William and George. This Will was witnessed by Jacob . I believe thatMartin died before 1810 possibly in this county, He did not appear on th e 1810 Rowan Couinty Census. All of the above supplied by Bill Molina (kmolina@erienet.net ) and much of this information was taken from work done by Mack and Greer Sheets. Some in formation about Martin taken from The Sheets Genealogyby Reverend Clayton B. Miller, a minis ter of the Church of Brethern. This can be found in the Ashe County Public Library. THE H ERITAGE OF ASHE COUNTY, VOL. II (1994) page 268 contains information on Martin Sheets (171?- 1810)... came from the Bayern District in Germany. He arrived with 4 boys and 6 girls. No na me for wife or girls ************************************************************************ ** ***************************** (Note: Keep in mind whilereading this, that there is stil l a discrepancy in whether there were two Martins; one born abt. 1714 and the other about 1 735. As of this date, we are "assuming" the information we have is for Martin who was bor n in 1735.) MartinSheets was born about 1735. It is not known exactly where he was born . It isbelieved that he and three brothers came to the United States, via Holland, from Ger many and may have been known as German Dutch. The only country in the 1700s with any "She ets" found in their records is Germany. The name, of course, was spelled "Schaets, Scheatz , Shultz, Sheetz, etc., but was pronounced "Sheets" according to old documentation. Martin' s father or brother was named George. Martin did have a family when he crossed the Atlantic : a wife; 4 boys, and 6 girls, with the oldest child being 15 years of age. It appears a t this date (1999) that Martin settled in Pennsylvania. He later moved to Rowan County wher e he is shown on the Tax Roll in 1762 and in the 1790 Census. Therewere only two Sheets' i n the State of North Carolina in 1762; Martin and George. Martin stayed in Rowan County unt il his death in 1810.
