She was a woman of character, determination and of a strong constitution. Her mind was as keen and alert in old age as when she was young. Her
memory seldom failed her.

Several of her grandchildren and great grandchildren have inherited her fantastic memory. Until the day she died at the age of 95, she was independently able to care for herself with assistance from no one.

Aley was well known in the communtiy as an herb doctor, treating people for miles around with her medicines and poultices. She would send the boys out into the fields and woods of the countryside to collect the herbs she needed for various
ailments. She enjoyed excellent health all of her life which spoke well for her proficiency in, and knowledge of the old herbal remedies. When her grandson Jasper was born with both tiny fists tichtly clinched she made poultices of Opeydilldock, Poke root, to apply to them and gradually loosened them so that he had complete use of his hands.

In addition to her reputation as an herb doctor she was a well-known midwife, having delivered many babies in her life time. The last time her grandson, who was 20 years old at the time, could remember when she delivered one, she was 91 years
of age. He recalled that every once in awhile, she would not be home for breakfast, having quietly left the house the prior night to deliver a baby. She would not return for a day or two. She was also called on often to sit with and care for the sick in the community.

She was also a very good seamstress, being able to sew well-cut clothing for men. She also made all of the clothing for her several daughters and two sons. quilting bees were common in her day, and it is certain that she attended many, being
good company herself and enjoying that of others.

Harrison often said that when they were small children, she would speak nothing but 'Dutch' (Deutch or German) to them. They learned much of the language from her. Only in later years did she speak english to them. George and his son
Christian may have spoken mixed German and English. Washington, too, may have used it more or less.

Everything I have seen, read or heard says Randolph was born in NC. In the 1850 annotated Census it says NC. Everyone I know researching the Hubbards says NC. A Joseph Hubbard in Ohio told me the death certificate in Richmond, Va. lists his
parents as Thomas and Frances Hubbard and this certificate was filled out by Wilson Cox. Wilson was Aley's sister, Eliza's husband and it was with Eliza and Wilson that Randolph and Polly ( Mary Adaline's nickname) spent their last years. They visited different children
for weeks at a time but called Eliza's home. We don't know if they ever saw Aley after leaving Ashe Co. NC.
Additional information about this story Description Taken from rootsweb website Date Location http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=tamer&id=I19325 Attached to

Aley Hubbard (1813 - 1908)

Other trees this object is saved to

Gibson Family Tree

</line>
</metadataxml> |
