by Devon LaSalle originally shared this on 18 Apr 2017
</line><line>
There are several inconsistencies on Ancestry regarding the name, marriage and children of Jacob Bear (often shown as Baer, 1724-1788). If you have added this man to your family tree or are planning on doing so, please read this before you go any further.
</line><line>
According to many Ancestry member trees, his name was John Jacob Bear and he had two wives: Catherine Miller and Barbara Miller. This was the first clue that inconsistencies were present, as both of these ladies would have been alive at the same time. Divorce was virtually unheard of in the early-mid 1700s and there are records indicating both of their death dates, so it is highly unlikely that they would have married the same person.
</line><line>
Upon further investigation, we find two records that solve the puzzle:
</line><line>
First, a roster of Revolutionary ancestors of the Indiana Daughters of the American Revolution (Volume 1) shows Jacob Baer married Istana Barbara Miller and had the following children:
</line><line>
- Jacob III (never married)
</line><line>
- Adam (never married)
</line><line>
- Henry (married Catherine Runkle)
</line><line>
- Barbara (married Jacob Kisling)
</line><line>
- Mary (married Henry Harnsberger)
</line><line>
- Christina (married Michael Mallow - these are my relations and I can verify this information to be accurate)
</line><line>
- Annie (married George Archenbright)
</line><line>
- Elizabeth (married George Koegher)
</line><line>
However the most compelling evidence comes from page 384 of the Virginia Valley records: genealogical and historical materials of Rockingham County, Virginia, and related regions. This states that Catherine Miller (often mistakenly attributed to marrying Jacob) was actually the wife of John Baer who is Jacob's brother. What's more, it confirms that Catherine Miller's sister, Barbara Miller was the wife of Jacob.
</line><line>
According to this record, the children of John Baer and Catherine Miller had the following children:
</line><line>
- Anna (married Jacob Miller)
</line><line>
- Barbara (married Andrew Andes)
</line><line>
- Mary (married ?? Harpine and James Kennerly)
</line><line>
- Jacob (married Mary Karns/Carns)
</line><line>
- John Jr (married Elizabeth Miller)
</line><line>
- Henry (married Catherine Karns/Carns - sounds like another case of two brothers marrying a set of sisters, but don't quote me on this)
</line><line>
- Elizabeth (married Michael Trout)
</line><line>
I can see how this would be confusing for people. It is important to remember some things when researching older lines: It was quite common for sets of brothers from one family to marry sets of sisters from another. Not only were there significantly fewer people back then, the communities generally surrounding the local church and tended to be quite tight-knit. You will also see the same names popping up in multiple generations and through multiple siblings' offspring. Generally speaking, a lot of the names used during this time were passed down through generations, came from the Bible or both.
</line><line>
In short: If you are trying to figure out of your ancestor was John or Jacob Baer, have a look at who your next ancestor was and who they married. John and Jacob are NOT the same person, and Catherine and Barbara Miller did NOT marry the same guy. John married Catherine, and Jacob married Barbara (sometimes called Anna Barbara). You can find the above-mentioned records saved under Jacob Bear in my family tree.
</line>
</metadataxml>
