The defeat of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth on 22 August 1485 has established Henry VII on the throne, ending the Yorkist rule and initiating that of the new royal line of the Tudors.</span><br style="color: #333331; font-family: verdana, ayuthaya, hanaminbfont, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><br style="color: #333331; font-family: verdana, ayuthaya, hanaminbfont, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><span style="color: #333331; font-family: verdana, ayuthaya, hanaminbfont, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Browne was constituted governor of Queenborough Castle, Kent in 1487 and on 16 June the year took part in the Battle of Stoke Field when John de la Pole (pronounced "pool"), Earl of Lincoln (named by Richard III as his royal heir) accompanied by the pretender to the throne, Lambert Simnell, sustained a signal defeat. Henry knighted many of his supporters in the aftermath of the battle including Anthony Brown.</span><br style="color: #333331; font-family: verdana, ayuthaya, hanaminbfont, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><br style="color: #333331; font-family: verdana, ayuthaya, hanaminbfont, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><span style="color: #333331; font-family: verdana, ayuthaya, hanaminbfont, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Being constable of the castle of Calais, Browne and Sir Richard Nasan, deputy-lieutenant of Calais, were commissioned, in consideration of "their loyalty, industry, foresight, and car," to receive the sum of 25,000 franks in gold, due 1 November, 1502, being an annual payment from the French king, according to agreement concluded 3 November 1492; and again, in two years afterwards he was commissioned to receive the same payment.</span><br style="color: #333331; font-family: verdana, ayuthaya, hanaminbfont, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><br style="color: #333331; font-family: verdana, ayuthaya, hanaminbfont, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><span style="color: #333331; font-family: verdana, ayuthaya, hanaminbfont, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Sir Anthony Browne married firstly (by licence dated 20 January 1488) Eleanor Ughtred, daughter of Sir Robert Ughtred of Kexby, North Yorkshire, and Katherine Eure, daughter of Sir William Eure, by whom he had an only daughter, Anne Browne, who married Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk.</span><br style="color: #333331; font-family: verdana, ayuthaya, hanaminbfont, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><br style="color: #333331; font-family: verdana, ayuthaya, hanaminbfont, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><span style="color: #333331; font-family: verdana, ayuthaya, hanaminbfont, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">He married secondly Lucy Neville, widow of Sir Thomas Fitzwilliam of Aldwark, North Yorkshire and daughter of John Neville, 1st Marquess of Montagu, and Isabel Ingaldesthorpe. Lucy, was an unswerving supporter of the House of York and in the reign of Henry VII was noted as one who "loves not the King" and was actively promoting the rival claim of her cousin Edmund de la Pole, 3rd Duke of Suffolk. This, combined with her husband's possession of the crucial fortress of Calais, was a constant worry to supporters of Henry VII. The heavy fine imposed on her in 1507, although the pretext was her late husband's neglect of duty, was very likely a warning by the Crown not to meddle in politics. She appears to have heeded the warning and lived peacefully until 1534.</span><br style="color: #333331; font-family: verdana, ayuthaya, hanaminbfont, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><br style="color: #333331; font-family: verdana, ayuthaya, hanaminbfont, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"><span style="color: #333331; font-family: verdana, ayuthaya, hanaminbfont, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Sir Anthony left a will dated 25 Sept 1505 requesting burial at St Nicholas Church, Calais, next to his first wife.</span></p></line></content></metadataxml> |
