He was an inn keeper and farmer . In 1762 he built a more permanent farm house at the Miller site at Academy Drive and Rte. 322 ( south western corner ) that still stands today (1 ) .His Inn was a very significant place for the development of Ephrata , as many visitors / travelers stayed at the Inn during this time period . . There were about 260 sick and injured Revolutionary soldiers that were treated at the Cloisters during the war ,per Michael Showalter Cloister Museum Curator( there may have been up to 500 being cared for in the Cocalico Valley Area at private homes and the Cloisters combined ). Henry Died of camp fever ( Dysentary or Typhus ) , contracted while taking care of the sick and injured revolutionary soldiers at the Ephrata Cloisters ( 2 ) .

(1)-See "Miller Family" by A. The Indian hostilities in 1755 led them to seek refuge at Town Fork, north of the Wachovia settlement (Salem), Forsyth County, NC.
Johannes Miller's parents were from Bergelbach, Nassau (a former independent German duchy which is now a part of Hesse-Nassau).

After coming from Pennsylvania, Johannes and Maria first settled on the New River in Virginia.

Immigration Record:
Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s Record
about Johannes Muller
Name: Johannes Muller
Year: 1753
Age: 27 (b. 1726)
Place: Pennsylvania
Source Publication Code: 1804
Primary Immigrant: Muller, Johannes
Annotation: Taken from original manuscripts in the state archives. Johan Ludwig Klop
Johannes Muller ** Hans Georg Koch
(Note: glw; from Ancestry Immigration Records)

In 1775, the outbreak of the Indian Wars led them to move to the Town Fork (Rowan County) in North Carolina. They were Moravians and refuged with the Moravians at their settlement of Bethabara during the worst of the Indian troubles.

Johannes (aka John Miller) Muller was born in the state of Pennsylvania. At the time there were only three counties in Pennsylvania, Bucks, Chester and Philadelphia. His parents emigrated to America from Bergelbach, Nassau (A former independent German duchy). Johannes and Maria Faber Muller moved from Pennsylvania and settled on the New River in Virginia. Because of Indian uprisings they moved from Virginia and moved to the area known as Town Forks, North Carolina, located along the forks section of the Yadkin River in Rowan County. It was in Rowan County that John (Johannes) converted to the Moravian religion. Davidson County was formed from a portion of Rowan County which included this region of Friedberg and Muddy Creek where the Millers lived.

Johannes Miller and his family is said to come from Salem, North Carolina with a party of Moravians upon the advise of friendly Indians in that area. When the Indian hostilities flared up, Johannes decided to return to Pennsylvania. (This was during the time of the Revolutionary War.) On his journey to Pennsylvania, Johannes had a great deal of trouble while trying to cross one very swollen river. After the War, he returned to Salem and was astonished to learn that the friendly Indians had followed him all the way from Salem to Pennsylvania. They had protected him from harm because they liked him so much.

Johannes and Maria had a plantation on Muddy Creek in Rowan County, North Carolina and they were the parents of thirteen children.

Marriage 1 Maria Magdalena Faber b: 14 Jun 1735 in Pennsylvania
Married 1749, Pennsylvania

Children:
Heinrich Miller b: 23 Oct 1751
Michael Miller b: 31 Oct 1753
Sarah Miller b: 18 Oct 1755
Maria Miller b: 20 Oct 1757 in , North Carolina
Susanna Miller b: 21 Jan 1761
Johannes Miller b: 9 Mar 1763 in Muddy Creek, Rowan, North Carolina
Valentine "Felty" Miller b: 18 Sep 1766 in , North Carolina
Catharine\a "Kate" Miller b: 27 Dec 1769 in , North Carolina
Christina Miller b: 17 Mar 1771 in , Rowan, North Carolina
Joseph Miller b: 1 Mar 1773 in , North Carolina
Johann Jacob Miller b: 24 Aug 1775
Jonathan Miller b: 28 Dec 1776 in , North Carolina
David Miller b: 28 Dec 1776 in , North Carolina

Johannes Muller had a son named Henry Miller and I believe this is the descent of the property of Mavis Weaver. (glw)

He also had thirteen children ranging from Henry the oldest of 1751 to the youngest, Jonathan, in 1776 who had a twin brother, David. The names of the children of Johannes and Maria Muller were handed down from generation to generation. They were: Jonathan, Henry, Michael, Sarah, Susanna, John Miller, Jr., Valentine, Catherine, Joseph, Johann Jacob, and David Miller. From my observations, if for some reason, a brother could not pass on his own name, his brother would pass it down for him to one of his children. This was the case all through the Weaver--Miller tree.

John Miller was listed on the 1768 Rowan County, NC tax list.
Johanne and his family (John) became members of the Friedberg Society, Moravian Church, when it was organized in 1770. this church is just across the Rowan County border in what is now Davidson County.

John Miller is listed on the 1773 Rowan County tax list and taxed for 3 polls, himself and sons, Henry and Michael Miller.

On February 12, 1780, John Miller made his will in Rowan County, NC. He mentioned his wife but didn't list her name. He named his oldest son Henry and son Michael. He also named John Henry Miller, his grandson. According to the Moravian records, John and his wife had 13 children. Some researchers say he died on the 9th of February but we know from when he made his will this is not true.

Census Records are from 1790, 1800.
Cemetery Records: Maria Magdelena Faber Miller died in 1813 in Rowan County. She is buried at Friedberg where John is buried but not near him. Her tombstone says, "Maria Muller D: 1813.
This family Tree: Geneva White/Weaver-Miller-Greer Lines

Other Miller Records:

Much data is recorded about this family in "The Millers of Ashe County, NC" by Danny L. Miller as well as in the Moravian records of North Carolina. His Moravian Obituary (called a "Lebenslauf") contains some very interesting information on John and his family. Thanks to Cecilia Brown for sharing a transcription of the Lebenslauf, and thanks to Danny Miller for his work on this family. Source: This is taken from the Marty Grant web site. It is a different kind of web site in that most of the information is presented in bits and pieces and the real proof seems missing in places. It has been very helpful along with Phoebe's information in establishing a genealogy and a direction for finding the records to prove it. (Marvin Grant Web Site furnished much information on this family gathered from many records and people.)

"Johannes Muller (later "John Miller") was born 25 Mar 1726 (per his obituary) in Pennsylvania (per obituary). I don’t know what county he was born in, but in 1726 there were only three counties in Pennsylvania: Bucks, Chester and Philadelphia. These counties were much larger then than they are now, but John must have been born within the bounds of one of them." (Marvin Grant)

John married Maria Magdelena Faber in 1746 (per obituary) presumably in Pennsylvania. Her parents were Michael Faber and Sarah Meinhert formerly of Baden, Germany.

"At some point after marriage the family moved to New River which rises in Western NC and flows north into south Western Virginia. I’m not sure where they lived exactly along that river, but by 1755 the French and Indian War drove them to Bethebara, the Moravian Settlement in what was then Rowan County, North Carolina. It was there (according the Lebenslauf) that John converted and joined the Moravian church. Sometime afterwards he moved to South Fork near Muddy Creek."

John Miller was listed on the 1768 Rowan County, NC tax list.

John Miller and family became members of the Friedberg Society (Moravian Church) when it was organized in 1770. This church is just across the Rowan County border in present day Davidson County.

John Miller was listed on the 1773 Rowan County tax list and taxed for 3 polls, himself and sons Henry and Michael Miller.

On 12 Feb 1780 John Miller made his Will in Rowan County, NC. He mentioned his wife but didn’t list her name. He named his oldest son Henry and son Michael. He also named grandson John Henry Miller. Witnesses were Adam Spach, George Landman, and John Daner. Although they weren’t mentioned by name, John and wife had 13 children as proven by his obituary and other Moravian records.

John Miller died on 14 Feb 1780 (per obituary) and buried at the Friedberg Cemetery in present day Davidson County, NC. His marker says "John Muller D: 1780". Linda Watford (now deceased) found his grave several years ago.

Widow Mary was listed on the 1790 census as head of household in Rowan County. I don't know who the 2nd of the two older boys is. One of them must be Joseph (1773), and I once thought the other was Valentine (1766), but he is actually listed nearby in his own household, so I don't know who this might be with Mary in 1790.

1790 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1790 Rowan Co, NC pg 175 Mary Miller 2-1-1-0-0
Analysis:
2 Male(s) 16 and Up (before 1774) Son? Joseph Miller

Widow Mary was listed on the 1800 census in Rowan County near several of her children.

1800 census analysis (based on available evidence): (Explanation of this census)

1800 Rowan Co, NC pg 417 Mary Miller 00000-00001-0-0
Analysis:
1 Female(s) 45 & up (before 1755) Mary Faber Miller (1735) wd/o John
I did not find her on the 1810 census.
(Note: Only heads of households were listed, no other names)

(This was a breakdown of the information according to previous records by Marvin Grant) "Maria Magdelena Faber Miller died in 1813 in Rowan, now Davidson County, NC. She is buried at Friedberg also (but not near John). Her tombstone says "Maria Muller D: 1813". If she had a Lebenslauf I have not seen it yet."

Children
John Miller and Mary Faber had 13 children as stated in John’s obituary and other records. I have the names from Danny Miller’s book. Several of them are proven by Moravian records that I’ve seen, but I don’t know what the evidence for the rest is. The number matches that given in John’s obituary so I’m sure the list is accurate, I’m just not sure what the original sources for their names and birth dates are. Two sons are proven by a tax record and the same two are also proven by John's Will of 1780. A grandson is named in that will. (Marvin Grant)

Children of John Miller and Maria Magdelena Faber were as follows:

1.
