<metadataxml><content><line>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Samuel was the first child of John IG and Elizabeth (Scherer) Carpenter.&amp;nbsp; He was born in 1763, probably in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.&amp;nbsp; His name appeared, noted as "John's son" paying freeman tax in 1786 (Pennsylvania Tax and Exoneration and Pennsylvania Septennial Census lists).&amp;nbsp; He probably lived with his parents and siblings in Earl Township, Lancaster County in 1790 (US Census).&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</line><line>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;As the Northwest Territory became open to settlement, Samuel, with his cousin, Emanuel II and brother William and wife, Nancy Carpenter began the Carpenter family migration to the midwest in 1798.&amp;nbsp; Samuel, a surveyor, surveyed a tract of land along the Hocking River, and secured a claim from the land office at Chillicothe.&amp;nbsp; In the summer they built a log cabin and moved in, and by fall had built a permanent home of hewed logs, 24 feet square and with two stories. &lt;br&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</line><line>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;In 1800, at the time of the organization of Fairfield County, Ohio, Samuel was commissioned as a Justice of the Peace.&amp;nbsp; Later that year, he returned to Pennsylvania and was successful at persuading his father to relocate to Ohio.&amp;nbsp; A number of his neighbors and friends accompanied him on the return trip to Ohio, while his father and brother David prepared to move the following year.&lt;br&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</line><line>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;In 1801, Samuel was made an associate judge of the Court of Quarter Sessions.&lt;br&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</line><line>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;In May of 1802, Samuel, David and their parents set out for Ohio. On the way, near Bedford, Pennsylvania, his mother, Elizabeth (Scherer) suffered a stroke.&amp;nbsp; She was cared for at the tavern run by Robert Smith, husband of Susannah (Line) Smith who took very good care of Elizabeth.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Samuel stayed with his mother during her recovery, while the others continued on to Ohio.&amp;nbsp; Elizabeth made a remarkable recovery (and lived at least 13 more years).&lt;br&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</line><line>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;In 1803, Samuel was elected one of the associate judges of the Court of Common Pleas and in 1804 he was appointed by Governor Tiffin a trustee of the Ohio University.&amp;nbsp; He served in those offices until his death.&lt;br&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</line><line>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Ohio Early Census tax lists, show a Samuel Carpenter residing in Fairfield County, Ohio from 1806 through 1810. His parents, John IG and Elizabeth (Scherer) Carpenter lived with Samuel, who had since built his own cabin, until their deaths in 1807 and 1811, respectively.&lt;br&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</line><line>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Samuel died in September 1821, aged 58 and is buried in the Carpenter-Koontz Cemetery in Fairfield County, Ohio.&lt;br&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</line><line>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Samuel never married.&lt;br&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</line><line>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</line><line>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</line><line>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</line><line>&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</line></content></metadataxml>
