<metadataxml><content><line>&lt;font size="3"&gt;&lt;font face="Times New Roman"&gt;Hugh Shearer&amp;#39;s father Abraham, was a farmer and a cooper, having migrated to southwest Ohio in the early 1800&amp;#39;s from North Carolina. In 1827 or 28 Hugh&amp;#39;s father and a Peter Harrison built a flat-boat and took it down river to sell. On their way back up stream the canoe in which Abraham, his son Absalom and eight others were traveling in capsized. All were saved except Abraham and Absalom Shearer. Hugh was about 4 years old when his father and oldest brother Absalom drowned in the Stillwater River of southwest Ohio. At that time Hugh&amp;#39;s mother Anna had 9 children living at home to raise, 5 sons and 4 daughters ranging in age from 19 to 2. Anna died in 1842 in Miami County, Ohio. Hugh married in Darke County to Sarah Ann Shepherd in January of 1843. In the 1850&amp;#39;s Hugh moved his family now of a wife and three children to Indiana. On the 1st of March 1854, Hugh Shearer, of Darke County, Ohio, purchased forty acres of land in Indiana from the United States Government. The property was identified as &amp;quot;the northeast quarter of the northeast quarter of section thirty-four, in township thirty-one, of range one west&amp;quot;. This property is located in Pulaski County, Indiana.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;September 22, 1856, the Shearer&amp;#39;s moved to Tippecanoe County, Indiana, where Hugh built a steam saw and grist mill and also engaged in general merchandising. When Hugh married he had only $10, and when he left Ohio, had $13016. It cost him $24 to move his family and goods, and with the $106 left he bought a stock of goods, and when he left Tippecanoe County, Indiana sold out for $1,050, having increased his stock and taken care of his family with the profits. Hugh Shearer, moved to Clinton County May 2, 1859, and bought a farm in Michigan Township where he lived until 1864, when he sold out and went to Howard County, Indiana, and a year later went to Delaware County. In 1869, Hugh returned to Clinton County and again bought a farm in Michigan Township, which he owned two years to a day, then moved to Kirklin Township. In 1883, Hugh Shearer moved again to a farm in Michigan Township, where he lived about two years and then exchanged his farm for property in Hillisburgh and forty acres of land in Johnson Township. In January, 1886, Hugh opened a store and carried a general stock of merchandise suitable for farmers. Both Hugh and Sarah were members of the Methodist church. He was also a Freemason and with two other men founded the Hillisburgh lodge no. 550, of which he was the first worshipful master&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;</line></content></metadataxml>
