Sappington states a young Brethern named Jonathan Miller moved from the Salem area to the Ashe County Brethern settlement shortly after 1800. His father was reputed to have settled in the Salem area before the War of Independence. In a document dated November 23, 1801, this Jonathan Miller was identified as one of the eight children of John Miller Sr."

Father: Johannes Miller b: 25 Mar 1726 in PA
Mother: Maria Magdalena Faber b: 14 Jun 1735 in PA

Marriage 1 Margaret Carpenter b: 27 Oct 1784 in Surry County NC

Jonathan Miller, 1776, and brother to Henry Miller of 1751, who was the father of the Henry Miller of 1770 who is the owner of the Land Grant Deed of 1798 and of the Add-on Henry Miller made to the Property. The Henry Miller of 1770 then sold the property to Johathan Miller or he handled the property when it was sold to his son David Miller at a later time. But I think he probably bought it and later gave it to David Miller his son. David was wealthy at his death and had probably at least 1300 tracts of land which he divided among his boys at his relatively early death. One of these children was Jonathan M. Miller who married Jane (Jennie) Weaver.

1850 Ashe County, North Carolin Federal Census Lists:
Jonathan age 74
Margaret age 67
Nancy age 30
Margaret age 23
Jonathan age 20
Elizabeth age 10.
With this family Christina Carpenter is listed as 50. This must be Margaret's sister living with them.

David is listed age 40 on the 1850 Census
Mary Polly 27, 2nd wife, with their children:
John age 7
Jonathan age 5
James age 4
William age 2
Jesse a baby.

1870 Ashe County Census: Ashe County, North Carolina
Mathias is listed as age 52
Jane age 54
Susanna 21
Margaret 18
Naoma 13
Elizabeth 14
William 9
Jonathan 9/10

Susanna Married her first cousin Jacob Davis. Elizabeth married John Weaver, son of Lt. (Marvin Grant's Web site on the Millers)

Mathias Miller married Jane Weaver daughter of Lt. Isaac Weaver and Jane Lewis. All their children are listed on the 1850 and 1870 Ashe County, N. C. Sappington states, "A young brethren named Jonathan Miller moved from the Salem area to the Ashe County Brethren settlement shortly after 1800. His father was reputed to have settled in the Salem area before the War of Independence. In a document, dated November 23, 1801, this Jonathan Miller was identified as one of the eight children of John Miller Sr.
(Johannes Muller or John Miller Sr.) (Record: Zurligen Family Records)
---------
Jonathan had moved west a few miles into Ashe County by 1801, for on 6 Jun 1801 he entered 50 acres of land on the south side of the North Fork of New River. (Entry # 402).

It was around this same time (ca 1801) that Jonathan Miller married Margaret Carpenter in Ashe County. No marriage record was found, but their marriage is proven by several sources including the estate records of her parents. Margaret Carpenter was born 27 Oct 1784 (per tombstone) in Surry (now Yadkin) County, North Carolina. She is a child of Mathias Carpenter and Elizabeth Miller. It is possible that Margaret was related to Jonathan since her own mother was a Miller, but no connection is known. Her grandparents were Christian and Veronica Miller of Surry (now Yadkin) County. Jonathan's parents were of the Moravian faith, as was Margaret's grandparents, so there could be some sort of connection between them.

On 5 May 1802 Jonathan Miller witnessed a deed from Elisha Collins to Mathias Carpenter (his father-in-law). (Ashe County, NC Deed Book A page 434).

On 15 Jan 1810 Jonathan Miller entered 100 acres (Entry # 2228) adjoining his own land.

Other Notes:
The Brethern in the Carolinas by Roger E.
