OBJE:_META | <metadataxml><content><line><p>John Counts of Glade Hollow is the earliest definitely known ancestor of the Counts of southwest Virginia. Nothing is definitely known of his ancestry, relatives or early life. Family tradition was strong that he was Black Dutch, which means that he was of Germanic origin. The place of his nativity is likewise unknown. It is possible that he was a descendant of some immigrant from the Rhine Oalatine, who came over to Pennsylavania and later drifted down with the south moving tide of migration into the Valley of Virginia during the 18th century. There were numerous immigrants of the name Kuntz (the old Germanic firm of Counts) and it's various spellings. Several of them became settlers in the Shenandoah Valley at an early date. It is also possible that our John Counts was a descendant of Jospeh Kuntz who came from Germany to Germanna, VA in 1714.</p></line><line><p>The earliest known record of John Counts is in Frederick County, VA. In August 1765, John Bumgarner conveyed to John Counts 270 acres on the west side of Hawksbill Creek. The old Counts home is located about three miles northwest of the town of Luray and about one mile south of the mouth of the Hawksbill in Page County. John Counts name appears in the first tax lists of Shenandoah County in &nbsp;1782 and is shown in each years list until 1789. He left for the rich lands on the Clinch and four of his eight children came to Russell County. In 1791 he received 50 acres and in 1792 he added an additional 166 acres. The old Counts farm in Glade Hollow is very similar to his old Hawksbill farm.</p></line><line><p>On April 3, 1802 he prepared his last will and testament with a deed to Philip Counts of Shenandoah County for 75 acres situated on the Hawksbill Creek. He died just after the turn of the century</p></line></content></metadataxml> |
