<metadataxml>
<line>
This site was created so Bare cousins everywhere could share their family stories, historical events and even legends. In fact, this site was created in 2002 as a result of some information that was shared by distant cousins that 'met' online. When I say distant, I really mean it! Turns out our common Bare ancestor known as Jacob Bare, Sr lived over 200 years ago!!

Wow... isn't that a story for the new millenium! Email enabled what rarely ever happens in history especially in a transitory people....being able to connect with family from several generations back.

FYI, there's alot of confusion because of the Bar, Bear, Bare, etc, spelling variations. Refer to "You know, what's his name" (index left column) for more about our surname as well as the name 'Hans'... it will help clear up some of the mysteries.

Within these pages you'll meet Jacob Bare, Sr who had quite an interesting history as one of the original settlers in southeastern Ohio in the early 1800's. He called his spot on the Ohio River Bare's Landing. Today its the location of the Hannibal Dam & Locks. (follow the link to the photo and Bare's Landing was on the north or left side of the river and New Martinsville, WV is on the south side. (Think they'd consider giving this beautiful spot back to the family?)

On this website over time you will find a little bit of information about Jacob Bare, Sr, his descendants, and his ancestors as far as we know. There are lots of gaps so if you can fill them we would love your help.

Our ancestors' surroundings include local historian Henry Burke's fascinating stories of the Monroe County Underground Railroad (of course the Ohio River was part of the Mason-Dixon line), settling of the wild, often dangerous frontiers of America in the 18th & 19th century, and about covered wagons of families to new homes and new livelyhoods.

So where did our ancestor Jacob Bare, Sr (1776/8-1859) of Baresville (now Hannibal), OH come from? A Monroe County, Ohio history website says he came from Maryland (see First Germans and Swiss). His marriage is recorded to Mary Steele in 1799 in Berkeley, VA (now West Virginia). He shows up in historical accounts of Monroe County's "Switzerland of Ohio" soon thereafter, although these monikers would come later than he did to the region.

My research so far indicates that his father was John Henry Bare, whose father was Abraham Bar, who is the son of Jacob Jagely Bar (aka Hans Jacob Jagely Bar). Bare researchers have indicated that Jacob Jagely Bar, his wife and 8 children (this number varies) came to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania from Switzerland directly or after spending some time in the Palatine region of Germany. (You'll see many of these stories in the Bare Links section).

Jacob Jagely Bar and two of his sons, Jacob Bare, Jr and John Bear, relocated to the Shenandoah River Valley in Virginia as three of its first settlers. My ancestor Abraham and apparently the rest of the siblings stayed in Pennsylvania. But where did Abraham's son John Henry Bare live? Where was John Henry's son Jacob Bare, Sr born? Did he move from Pennsylvania to Maryland to Berkeley, VA (where he married) to Bare's Landing, Ohio? more mysteries waiting to be solved!

Please bookmark the site and come back often as more will be added over time. Thanks for visiting and we hope you enjoy our Bare Family web site!

================================================================================================

or Bar,Baer, Barr, Bear, Behr and many other variations

A Little History about Jacob Bare, Sr and his descendants

The following historical account was written by Ken Bare in 1987 in his book entitled Descendants of Jacob Bare (1778-1859) of Baresville Ohio to 1987. Ken is a descendant of Jacob Bare, Sr's son Jacob Bare, Jr.
A copy of the foreword to his book was contributed to the 'cause' (this site) by Lynnette Johnson, descendant of Joseph Bare, Jacob, Sr's eighth child. According to the internet, the book is available at the West Palm Beach Library in Florida. I do not have a copy, although I would love to have one!
I have copied the forward here without permission because I do not know how to reach Ken Bare or his family. Based on his comments, however, I suspect that he would want this information shared so we can solve the mysteries of our Bare ancestors. If his family is available I would love to hear from them at mjbare@prodigy.net so I can secure proper permission. I have included the foreword because it not only has Bare information but it tells alot about Mr. Bare's search for information and his attitude about family and genealogy research. He eloquently describes the challenges we all face in our Bare research and some of the reasons it is such a challenge... and such a joy.
Excerpt of Foreword written by Ken Bare 15 Feb. 1987

"This present document is intended to be looked upon as a work sheet. If everything develops as I hope, the distribution of it will bring about a small avalanche of letters to me indicating the errors that have been made and the additional material that should be added. Whereupon the new summary that will be based on that new information can then be considered as the best effort that the current generation is capable of.

So don't be afraid to 'mark up' your copy. If there are a great number of changes and additions to be made, then return the entire copy to me, otherwise just send the data- but be sure to indicate exactly where the new information goes. That is so that it will not be necessary to engage in extended correspondence. You may be sure that you will receive an edited copy when they are available.

The last ten years has been spent in putting together what you find here but that is not to say that it has been a chore. It is true that there has been much frustration and vexation. Even now I am deeply troubled that I have not been able to ferret out our immigrant grandfather. But for a person (me) who started out believing that he really had no relatives, the developing record has been an experience of joy. I am not a very outgoing person but the family contacts that I have made have made me a warmer and more loving individual. So I have much to be thankful for and hopefully there will be much more as this material falls into the hands of those of you who have so much more knowledge that belongs here. Our grandchildren will not grow up in the ignorance of family that I experienced. For instance I Know that somewhere in Illinois there is at least one family Bible that is sure to have many records that belong here- but I don't know who has it. Maybe some one of you can come up with that information. I will be glad to serve as a collection point for family data as long as I live. But hurry it up! I am in good health but I will be 80 next March and I don't need to tell you what time can do to the best laid of plans.

Jacob Bare, know as Jacob Bare, Senior was born in 1776 according to the census records but in 1778 according to his tombstone. He died 13 December 1859 at Hannibal, Monroe County, Ohio and was buried in the 'Old Cemetery'. He '---came to Ohio from Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland--- owned all the land on which the Town of Hannibal has since arisen.' (Newspaper article published by the Wheeling, West Virginia 'Sunday News' 5 Dec. 1913. This article was found by Eileen King of Prairie Rd, Aurora, Il and given to Sue Saylor of Simi VAlley CA from whom I obtained it.) The article was in commemoration of the 98th birthday of Nancy Bare O'Neill who was Jacob Bare's ninth child. Also from the same sources, '---was Justice of the Peace---teacher' and'---Father Bare came from Berkeley County, West Virginia'. This from an obituary hand written by Rev G. F. Jones. Mrs. King did not know the source.

There has, in the past, been some difference of opinion as to the identity of Jacob, Sr's wife. Consider:

He married (?) Mary Ann Stevens. (ancestor chart of Sue Saylor)

He married Mary Steele. (Baer Newsletter from Elaine Campbell in Ramona, CA)

He married Ann---- (Various National Censuses)

He married Margaret Strom (C. G. Barre, Clearwater, FL- justified by a letter from Zeta (Bare) Nickeson 2 g-granddaughter of Jacob Bare, Sr.

In this case we don't have to pay our money and make our choice- as I have, in my files, a copy of the Marriage Bond of Jacob and Mary Steele of Berkeley, West Virginia and Jacob's signature is the one I am familiar with from seeing it on records of real estate transactions. But what of all the census records that show the name of Jacob's wife as Ann? Here we have something of a mystery (something not rare in genealogical research). Perhaps Mary Steele's name was really Mary Ann, and after their first child was born and named Mary, they thought it would be less confusing for the mother to use Ann."

"But could Jacob have had more than one wife? It is possible for there is a significant gap between Samuel and Susannah. At this point I will anticipate the formal record and make a listing of this unusual family:

Father:   Jacob Bare, Sr.

Mother:  Mary (Ann?) Steele

Mary           . b. 8 Jan   1801

William S.     b. 1802

Elizabeth      8 May 1803

Samuel         died as infant

Susannah    1814?

Martin          20 Oct 1815

Martha         20 Aug 1817

Alexander    5 Jan 1821

Harriet

Franklin

Unless I am the heir of unanticipated help the mystery will have to stand. The court house at Woodsfield, Ohio, the county seat of Monroe County has been badly damaged by fire three times and no part of the original building remains. Also the part of the county that comprises Hannibal has, at various times, been within the perimeter of three other counties: Belmont, Washington and Guernsey. Not only that but Hannibal has not always been Hannibal. When Jacob, Sr. first inhabited the area, the place was called Bare's Landing and the tiny village was located on the bank of the Ohio River. But that land was very low and the first flood convinced everybody that they had better move to higher ground. So the name was changed to Baresville and it was moved northwest to where the terrain begins to rise abruptly (the move was less than 1/4 of a mile.) The original town-site was later sold to the government to be the eventual location of The Hannibal Locks. The change in name from Baresville to Hannibal was arbitrary and may be laid at the door of the US Post Office. They felt that the original name was too easily confused with others in the same general area and that their employees were not equal to the task of keeping them separate."

"I hope you find this historical data interesting, but what I am really trying to do is to give you some sense of the primitive conditions that applied 175 years ago when indians were a problem as well as bears and wolves- and wars. So it is not to be wondered at that records, even in court houses, have not survived. A few did, I found the record of Jacob's acquistion of one hundred and five acres of land in the court house at St. Clairesville in Belmont County and the date was 26 Jan 1811 (page 221 Vol "D" Deed Records). It is not remarkable that a record should appear in a county adjacent to the one in which a person was living - as county boundaries were altered from time to time. As indicated earlier Monroe County, where Jacob lived, at various times embodied parts of what is now Belmont, Guernsey, and Washington Counties. Incidentally, in the Belmont County record referred to, Jacob's name is spelled BEAR. Apparently there was nothing sacred in the spelling of a name in those times (especially if it was written by someone other than the person who owned it). As I pursued my search I have kept a record of variations in the spelling of our name and, though it seems inconceivable that a one syllable name could be so manipulated, the tally comes to 81 (at present), who knows how many more ways there are!

So the researcher is under a tremendous handicap and it is a happy day when you stumble over someone else who is hunting for the same people that you are. That is what happened when I was able to fill out the full extent of the family of Jacob Bare, Senior. To me it seemed that a family of twelve was full enough, still I was quite willing to add the additional three members when they were offered to me upon such good authority. Daniel Boon (that is really his legitimate name) of Keedysville, Maryland is the three g-grandson of Jacob, Sr, just as I am. He belongs to the line of Jacob's first child, Mary and I belong to the line of Jacob's sixth child, Jacob, Junior. Happily, Mary's second son, who was also named Jacob, kept his grandfather Bare's family line in his Bible and Dan was fortunate enough to have a copy. That is how I first learned of Samuel whom I had not heard of before- as well as Harriet and Franklin."

end of Foreword by Ken Bare 1987
</line>
</metadataxml>
