Bailey/ Mabel C. Withers family. Winiford married their son, Jack Raymond Bailey, on 19 Feb. 1939 ..... Edwina married their son, Donald Withers Bailey, about 1941. Our maternal grandfather was Harry Taylor Shearer, the son of Daniel W. Shearer and Mary Elizabeth Thompson, Daniels 4th wife.

Shearer - Research Notes Received from distant cousins, Eileen Kruger and Wilma Wies (?), round about 1998. From a book: " A Century of Wayne County, Kentucky, 1800 - 1900, by Augusta Phillips Johnson, writtten 1938, published by Standard Print Co. Louisville, KY, copyright 1939.

On December 13, 1800 the State Legislature of Kentucky passed an act creating a new county to be named Wayne in honor of General Anthony Wayne, Revelutionaryhero. The new county was formed from parts of Pulaski and Cumberland counties. This History was written by Augusta Phillips Johnson from bits and pieces of information provided to her through letters, Bible records, newspaper articles and family stories.

Pages 235-237: " When Cromwell disbanded his famouns Ironsides, he settled them on the confiscated estates in Northern Ireland. among them were the Shearers, whom we are unable to trace by name throughout the first two generations. They were English Puritians and Presbyterians. They preserve thier identities and traditions to this day, with but little admixture of Scotch-Irish blood on the one hand or Celtic blood on the other. All were first Prespyterians and old line Whigs, in this country, and all seemed to need or care for a stmulant.

Sometine before the Revolutionary War , about 1740, four brothers of this Puritan stock came to America with their families from the County of Amgh and Province of Ulster, Ireland [this is the county where from where my great, great grandma, Bridget Keenan wrote her letters of thanks. WSB] Their names were 1. George; 2. John; William 1; and James. One settled in New York, two in Pennsylvania and one in South Carolina. The South Carolina Branch of the family are traceable throughout North Carolina , Kentucky, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Iowa, and Nebraska, and the other branches and their families are found in almost every state in the Union. Wherever found they preserve their traditions --- personal, social and religious, and their phyical characteristics, gait and features are easily recognized. These Shearers are not to be confounded with the German Lutherans of about the same name ___ Scherer, Schearer, and Sherer, of whom there are a great number in this Country.

One of these brothers was the father of William Shearer II who married in Sout Carolina and was the father of William Shearer III. This was the William Christian Shearer III, our ancestor, born about 1760, North Carolina, died about 1830 in Wayne Co. Kentucky, buried at Bethesda Churchyard. William Christian Shearer III was married twice in North Carolina . "first wife Hanna Hoover", buried in Ashe Co. North Carolina, her children were: Daniel , Jacob, Henry, Sallie, Mary and David. The second wife (from whom J.B. Shearer of Emmerson, Nebraska descended) was a German Hessian, Named Sallie Walters. Her children were: Susan, Jane, Hannah, Soloman, Walter, Margaret, Catherine, William, Hester, Elizabeth and Nancy.

This William Christian Shearer was one of the early settlers of Wayne County, came about 1812. John Shearer's family in Monticello are descended from Jacob of the first family (Hannah's Children). The others from Daniel whose wife was Margaret Vickery, their children bring, Violet Rotten, Polly Huffaker, Adam N., Margaret Huffaker, Rebecca Hicks, Caroline Rankin, Sally Hicks-Marshall, Louisa Simpson, J. Jenkins, Frank, Broyles.

J.Jenks Shearer married Zeerelda, daughter of Samuel Ingram and Elizabeth Parmley. Their children were: Lousetta married Shelby Ragan, Emma C. married Thomas J. Rankin, Samuel married Mollie Huffaker, Menifee married Mary Wray, and James. Samuel was son of James Ingram .

'Marriage and Vital Records of Wayne county, Kentucky 1801 - 1860' by June Baldwin Bork, page 120: Henry Shearer married Polly Summers, 15 July 1811, Wayne, Kentucky.

'A Century of Wayne County, Kentucky 1800 - 1900' pub. at Louisville, KY: Standard Print Co., c1939, page 264: Henry Shearer Married Polly Summers, July 15, 1811. Wardman Summers married Nancy Summers, February 8, 1811. The first Robert Shearer in 1790 lived on the hill above the present site of Three Forks Church, and it was in his home that the church was constituted. Robert's grandfather is said to have lived just below the dam of the A.T. School on New River. " In October 1805 a plan was drawn up for a roof for the Meeting House and "In the following December four dollars in Brother Shearer's hands were spent for nails for the roof." On November 3, 1866 Robert Shearer, Eli Brown and Ransom Hayes were appointed commissioners to build a new church.

Comment: This is the only mention I've found so far for a Robert Shearer, other than in census records. There is a Robert Shearer and a Jano Shearer in 1790 Wilkes County, N.C. ( formed from Wilkes in 1799). I have no idea where he fits into the picture.

'Chadwick's History of Shelby County, Indiana, Indianapolis, Ind. William Smith opened the farms now occupied by J, R. Thompson, as eqarly as 1830. Smith was an important man in the early settlement of that neighborhood, but no trace of his descendants is to be found here now. In the same neighborhood, and probably earlier in point of time, was a Mr. Lander. Then, too, we hear of MR. SHEARER in this neighborhood at a very early date. Among the early settlers in this part, Mr. Pogue was farther west: he was near the county line. Down along the creek was Mr. Brewer, and close to the present site of old Conkey Town was Stephen Crane, Thomas W. and JOHN Q. (Quincy) DEAKIN came in 1835. They lived in this same neighborhood just on the south line of the Township.

'In the Foot Prints of the Pioneers of Stephenson County, Ill, Published, Freeport, Ill. !900 p 56 ... " May 15, 1845, Jacob Piper started for the west by wagon train, in a pasty (party?) composed of twenty-one persons, eleven of whom are now living, as follows: ... Shearer at Homer, Vermilion County, Ill. ( This is the branch for Willis ___ a Shearer researcher. WSB, one of the main ones, she and Eileen Krueger) John was born 1809 in Warren County, OH, died 1888 Jasper County, IA; Sarah b. 1814, Indiana, died 1848, JASPER county, IA. "Her father was Henry J, Shearer, mother was Sarah Johnson". Comment: I-(Willis?) believe that Sarah Shearer is the daughter of "Henry Shearer and Polly Summers, the Henry and Wife " of the quoied history excerpts, and the older sister of Eliza Jane (Eliza Jane m. She (Sarah) is still alive as of the 1870 census, so the 1948 death date seems to be erroneous. His father was a native of North Carolina; he emigrated from there to Kentucky thance to Ohio, thence to Indiana, thence to Vermilion County, Ill. where the subject of this sketch was born; was one of the earliest settlers of that county; when he was 16 years old, he came to Jasper County; came through with teams, and camped out; brought along their household furniture with the lot; thirteen bedsteads, which were a luxury at that time; landed one half mile east of Vandalia, in a shanty about 16X18 with a chimney built on the outside of timber; stoned it up the first thing they did after arriving; was among the earliest settlers; there were not more than four or five families in this part of the county; had to go to Oskaloosa for their milling, forty miles; Monroe, and Prairie City were not known; his father built the first frame building in Des Moines Tp. or in the County; Uncle Elias Prunty was to paint the first frame building for nothing; he painted it, on what terms he could not hear; Mr. Shearer and a man named Prunty fed the first cattle ever fed in this county; had to drive them 110 miles east, to a man named Day, for scales to weight them; received $3.55 per hundred; the first school house built on his fathers farm, was about one-half mile east of Vandalia.

[ Seems to me the following may have been covered already, but again, some of it may not, so here goes]. Based on census records and the foregoing county records and histories, I, Eileen Krueger, have identified the probable children of Henry Shearer and Mary (Polly) Summers. (still in Jasper Co. a/o 1870)

Henry J. b. 17 Nov 1832, ILL. Married Celia Ann Draper 16 May 1854 Jasper County, IA., d. 26 Feb 1913, Prairie City, IA. Celia was the daughter of William Draper.

The 1830 and 1840 census records show three more children in the household of Henry Shearer. I have not been able to identify then. but one possibility is Levi, b. 1828 ILL. (April 23, 2004; I believe Levi was probably the son of John Shearer, b. aboyt 1794 in N.C.. On the 1850 census they are just a few houses from each other in Dist #21, Vermilion county, ILL. Have no idea as to the relationship of John and Henry. )

Henry' Shearer's first wife died between 1850 & 1860. and he married (apparently) a widow, Sarah Johnson Pope, before 1860. A family History published by Dick Stoneking claims that after Henry's first wife died, he married Sarah Morgan in Jasper County in 1854. He offers no source for this information, and I have not yet been able to verify it. Census records seem to indicate that she was Sarah Johnson rather than Morgan. Henry died after 1870. In 1880, 69-yr old Sarah is living with her sister, Jane Johnson, in Jasper county IA. Sarah died 28 March 1901, age 90, buried Lowman cemetery, Polk County, IA (Iowa cemetery records, Ancestry.com)

As of O)ctober 25, 2003 ... by EILEEN A.
