<metadataxml>
<line>
Bates and all of these other boarder counties were desasted by the war (Civil War 1861-65). A Yankee general had issed order number eleven, this being General Ewing, which required everyone to move out of these boarder counties within 15 days without regard to whether they were or were not loyal Union men. So that, for instance, the poplutation of Bates County, six thousand in 1860, was zero in 1863. With that country adandoned, prairie fires swept through and almost all the improvements were destroyed so that when they were permitted to return after the way, nothing remained.

from a letter of June Welch to Rhoda Fone 7 Sep 1982
</line>
</metadataxml>
