OBJE:_META | <metadataxml><content><line><p><span style="font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: small;">Page 235 and following, "A century of Wayne County, Kentucky, 1800-1900, by Augusta Phillips Johnson, The Standard Printing Company, Inc., Louisville, Kentucky, Publishers</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: small;">"The Shearer Family"</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: small;">"When Cromwell disbanded his famous Ironsides, he settled them on the confiscated estates in Northern Ireland.&nbsp; Amoung them were Shearers, whom we are unable to trace by name throughout the first two generations.&nbsp; They were English Puritans and Presbyterians.&nbsp; They rpeserve their identity and traditions to this day, wityh but little admixture of Scotch-Irish blood on the one hand or Celtic blood on the other.&nbsp; All were at first Presbyterians and Old Line Whigs in this country, and all seemed to need or to care for a stimulant."</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: small;">"Some time before the Revolutionary War, about 1740, four brothers of this Puritanb stock came to Amewrican with their families from the County of Armagh and Province of Ulster, Ireland.&nbsp; Their names werre George, John, William I, and James.&nbsp; One settled n New York, two in Pennsylvania, and one in South Carolina.&nbsp; The South Carolina branch of the fmaily are traceable throughout North Carolina, Kentucky, texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Iowa, and Nebraska, and the other branches and them families are found in al most every state in the Union.&nbsp; Wherever found, they preserve their traditions -- personal, social, and religious, and their physical characteristics and conformation, gait and features are easily recogtnized.&nbsp; these Shearers are not to be confounded with the German Luterans of about the same name--Shcerer, Schearer, and Sherer, of whom there are a great number in this country."</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: small;">"ONe of these brothers was the father of William Shearer II who married in South Carolina, and was the father of William Shearer III. This was the William Christian Shearer, our ancestor, born about 1760, North Carolina, died about 1830, in wayne County, Kentucky, buried at Bethesday Churchyard."</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: small;">"William Christian Shearer was married twice in North Carolina.&nbsp; First wife, Hannah Hoover, buried in Ashe County, North Carolina.&nbsp; Her children were Daniel, Jacob, Henry, Sallie, Mary, David.&nbsp; {...not including info on 2nd wife here ...]</span></p></line><line><p><span style="font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: small;">"This William Christian Shearere was one of the early settlers of Wayne county; came about 1812. John Shearer's fmaily in Monticello are descended from Jacob of the first family.&nbsp; The others from daniel, whose wife was Margaret Vickery, their children being Violet Roten, Polly Huffaker, Adam N., Margaret Huffaker, Rebecca Hicks, Caroline Ranking, Sallie Hicks-Marshall, Louisa Simpson, J.
