<metadataxml><cemetery /><transcription>Methodist Episcopal Church, South - Minutes of the Western Virginia Conference MEMOIRS Rev. Walter R. Shearer. Your committee on Memoirs present the following as a part of their report, not having the necessary information to do justice to the work assigned them. Rev. Walter R. Shearer was born near Monticello, Wayne County, Kentucky, September 12, 1813; professed faith in Christ and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1882; was appointed class-leader before his probation closed; was licensed to preach in 1835; admitted on trial in the Kentucky Conference in 1837; elected deacon and received into the full connection in 1839; and ordained by Bishop J. Soule; elected elder in 1842; and ordained by Bishop Beverly Waugh, and died December 17, 1878. He was a man of great physical ability, had a strong mind, was of studious habits, made himself a good English scholar, and his mind was stored with useful knowledge, which enabled him to work efficiently in his Master's vineyard; a man of unflinching integrity; never prevaricated. He was an excellent doctrinal and practical preacher, and preached by example, too. From the most reliable information that your Committee can obtain, Brother Shearer traveled in the Kentucky Conference eleven years, and then located; but was not at ease in Zion in that relation, and at the first session of the Western Virginia Conference, held at Parkersburg, Virginia, September, 1850, he was readmitted, and labored faithfully until God took him. Your Committee are not informed in reference to his several fields of labor whilst in the Kentucky Conference, but by reference to the journal of our Conference, they find that he filled the following appointments, viz.: Wayne, Greenup, Barboursville, Ravenswood, Grayson, Big Sandy, Coalsmouth, Louisa, Liberty, and Old Town; continuing two years on most of the above fields. He also traveled Clarksburg District three years, and received three appointments to Catlettsburg District, but was unable to close up the third year's work on this District. He fell at his post. He was superannuated more than two years before his death, but even then he attended preaching, prayer-meeting and class-meetings, and was as active in these meetings, as his health would permit. He said to an intimate friend in the Fall of 1876: "I always loved life, but to me life is losing many of its charms; I am trying to be ready to live forever." He said in a Conference love-feast, (when his voice had failed, or nearly so) "I have lost no ground." Brother Shearer was married three times, and was very fortunate in finding spiritual help-mates. The wife of his youth, and the mother of his children, was of sterling worth. His second wife was in scripture language, "a good woman". His third wife was worth more to him than her weight in gold. In his protracted affliction, and on his death-bed, she watched over him with the care of a wife and mother, and did notor to herself and the sex to which she belongs; and when the last crisis came, she accompanied him to the edge of the chilly water. Brother Shearer filled the felation of child, brother, husband, neighbor, citizen, christian, preacher and presiding elder, so as to honor God, and obtain respect in all these various relations of life, and God's approval. And now "he rests from his labors and his works do follow him." W. Downtain, S. Black, J.C. Tinsley Committee</transcription></metadataxml>
