<metadataxml>
<line>
John IG Carpenter was the fifth child (3rd son) of Gabriel I and Appalonia (Herman) Carpenter. He was born in Lancaster County, PA in 1735. In 1762, he married Elizabeth Scherer, daughter of David and Mary () Scherer. According to a number of sources, she was born in Lancaster County in 1749. This date may not be accurate, as their first child (Samuel) was born in 1763. If his birth date is accurate, Elizabeth would have been only 14 at the time of his birth (and 13 when she was married). I suspect she was born earlier, perhaps around 1739.
</line><line>
John IG was a 2nd, then 1st Lieutenant in the Pennsylvania rifle regiment of Colonel Samuel Miles, Captain Peter Grubb Jr's Company, recruited in the spring of 1776. The regiment fought in the battle of Long Island in August of 1776 and suffered severe casualties. Later, the remainder of the regiment was with Washington's army in the retreat to the Delaware, and fought in the battles of Trenton and Princeton in New Jersey. In 1777 it fought in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown. One story is that, after those two battles, Gen. Washington visited Lancaster and was given a dinner by the citizens. Lt. John Carpenter was home on leave of absence and attended the dinner with his 9-year-old son, David.
</line><line>
The name John Carpenter (usually more than one name) appears on Earl Township tax lists from 1772 through 1785 showing ownership of at least 100 acres of land and livestock. In 1786, John IG can be definitely identified on both the Pennsylvania Septennial and Tax and Exoneration lists, as he is listed as "son of Gabriel" on the original forms. At that time he was the owner of 100 acres of land, 3 horses and 3 cows.

</line><line>
John is listed in Earl, Lancaster County in the 1790 and the 1800 US Censuses. In 1798, a number of the Carpenters began migrating to the Northwest Territory to settle in the future state of Ohio. John and Elizabeth remained in Pennsylvania until 1802 when he agreed to the move, at age 65. During the journey to Ohio, Elizabeth suffered a stroke and remained behind with her son, Samuel, while the others went on to Ohio. She later recovered and finished the journey. John IG and Elizabeth lived at first with their sons John and Samuel and later, in 1806, Samuel built a new home and they moved in with him. It was there that John IG died in January 1807. He was the first to die since the family had removed to Ohio and the first to be buried in the cemetery, now known as the Carpenter-Koontz cemetery.
</line><line>
Elizabeth is not listed in the early Ohio Censuses, so was probably still living with son, Samuel, who is listed in Fairfield County, Ohio in 1807, 1808, and 1810. Elizabeth died in 1811 and was buried in the Carpenter-Koontz cemetery.
</line><line>
John IG and Elizabeth (Scherer) Carpenter had five children (4 sons, 1 daughter): Samuel (born 1763), John (1766), David (1768), William (1779), and Mary (1781). Mary married Jacob Merkel and is the only child who did not migrate to Ohio. Samuel never married. John, David, and William married Elizabeth, Susannah, and Anna (Nancy) Carpenter, all daughters of Emanuel II Carpenter, son of Judge Emanuel I Carpenter.
</line>
</metadataxml>
