Bef. 1850) Andrew Garren, Sr (son of John Garron and Laura Marie Digges)77, 78, 79 was born January 27, 1761, 80, 81, and died Bef. 1850 in Buncombe Co, NC 82, 83. He married Mary Fouts. Includes Notes for Andrew Garren, Sr: [andrewgarren.FTW] Andrew Garren Sr was born 27 Jan 1761, according to entries in a Family Bible which Andrew Garren Sr presented to his son, William Garren Sr and wife, Sarah Anne Lanning, upon the occasion of their marriage on 2 Apr 1816. The entries for the Dedication Page of the Bible were provided by Rod Garren, 370 Laurel St, Broomfield CO 80020, owner of the Bible. Andrew Garren Sr's place of birth was not noted in the Bible records. Dr John Scott Davenport, in letters written to Mrs Ethel Stroupe, concludes that the Fouts and Garren families moved from the Digges Choice Settlement, located on the disputed border between Maryland and York County, Pennsylvania. Other evidence indicates that Peter Garren and Paul Garren moved from southwestern New Jersey to Maryland in the early 1740s. The Garren family may have arrived in Rowan County NC about 1761; therefore, Andrew could have been born in Maryland, Pennsylvania, or Rowan County NC. Andrew Garren Sr was a son of John Garren (3 Dec 1739) and Laura Marie Digges, a grandson of Paul Garren (3 Jun 1706) and Martha Hues, and a great grandson of James Garren (Jan 1666) and Berta Sporlinger according to entries in the Family Bible. According to Rod Garren, entries in the Family Bible reveal that Andrew Garren Sr had a brother named Jacob and a half-brother named John who had a wife named Hannah. Public Records for Jacob Garren Sr (b.c.1755-60) are found in Randolph County NC and Buncombe County NC. A John Garren, with two males under age 16, appears on the 1790 US census of Randolph County NC living nearby to Jacob Garren; however, no further records for that John Garren have been located. c.1777 - Andrew Garren Sr apparently married Mary Phoutz (Pfautz/Fouts?). The parents of Mary Fouts are not certain; however, two strong possibilities exist. If she is to be identified with Widow Fout, named in Rowan County NC deed records, who was living near Andrew Garren Sr, then she is identified by Dr John Scott Davenport as the widow of John David Pfautz, who died about 1778 in Rowan County NC. As an alternate identification, Gayle Maxson (2008 Georgetown Drive, Denton TX 76201), Pfautz/Foutz/Fouts: Our Palatine Heritage lists Mary Fouts as a child of DeWald Fouts Sr and Catherine Spengel. Click here to view Fouts/Pfautz Families in North Carolina. http://www.brinet.com/~garren/fouts.htm From public records it is apparent that Andrew Garren Sr and Mary Fouts settled at the headwaters of Hamby&amp;rsquo;s Creek, which begins east of the present city of Thomasville near the present Davidson/Randolph County Line, flows westward through Thomasville, and converges with Rich Fork of Abbott&amp;rsquo;s Creek. His neighbors, mentioned in deed records, were Widow Fout, Thomas Summers, Samuel Parks, Richard Seers, Lewis Beard, David Woodson and William Merrill (Merrell). 12 Feb 1779 - Richard A Enochs, Rowan County NC Vacant Land Entries 1778-1779 citing Rowan County, NC Land Entry #2079: William Merrill enters 640 acres in Rowan County on head of Hamby&amp;rsquo;s creek, beginning at a pine, running north, including improovements of Widow Fout and Andrew Garon. Transferred to Joseph Haden; from Joseph Haden to David Woodson. (Andrew Garren Sr may have been only about 19 years old at this time. According to Dr John Scott Davenport, Pfautz-Fouts-Foutz Newsletter No.8, October, 1982, neither the Widow nor Garren had preemption land rights and even if they had been so vested, they could not have stopped the exploitation, for both were recorded nonjuring pacifists, likely of the Brethren (Dunker) persuasion, but there were both Mennonites and Dunkers in the neighborhood. Ultimately, the Widow&amp;rsquo;s sons were able to acquire the land, but it took them more than fifteen years to clear their titles). (According to Dr Davenport, this suit appears related to the entry made by Andrew Garron in 1779, for John Leatherman was located in the general area of the Merrill entry and was sued by another person who had also been entered upon in the same area. Also, in the 1790 courts, Samuel Parks of Randolph County, who bought much of the land in the area which had been confiscated from Henry Eustace McCulloh, also sued John Leatherman for Trespass and collected. John Leatherman appears to have been the eldest son of Nicholas Leatherman, who identified himself as a "Dunker" in Rowan County court in 1780 in order to get relief from 12-fold taxes. Leatherman was in Burke County, NC in 1790 and in Buncombe County in 1800. There is surely some relationship between the Garrons and the Leathermans - According to research by Rod Garren, 370 Laurel St, Broomfield CO 80020, John Leatherman was married to a Fouts. The name of John Leatherman also appeared as a property owner in Digges Choice, MD/PA). 1786-1787 - Jo White Linn, Abstracts of The Minutes of The Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, Rowan County, North Carolina 1775-1789 Vol III:144 &amp;amp; 159 contains the following court records: 4 May 1786 - (4553) Andrew Garrin vs Thos Gallion, 1d. 5 May 1786 - (4557) Andw Garron vs Thos Gallion, same jury except Jno Conger for Jno Mising, 1d. 8 May 1787 - (554) Charistian Eller&amp;rsquo;s exrs. vs Edwd Moore. Petit jury Wm Murdock, Wm Young, John Ramsey, James Potts, Allen Alexander, Jno Dancey, Jas Patterson, Jas McEwin, Robt Cummins, Fran. Lock, Andw Garron, &amp;pound;15.4.8. 8 May 1787 - (557) Exrs of HU Montgomery vs John Dunns admrs &amp;amp; Mathw Troy. Jury Wm Murdock, Wm Young, John Ramsey, James Potts, Allen Alexander, James McCulloh, John Dancey, Danl &amp;amp; James McEwin, Robt Cummins, Andw Garron, John Foard, &amp;pound;32.2.0. Sep 1787 - Dr John Scott Davenport citing Randolph County NC court minutes: Andrew Garron served as a juror at this court. (JSD Note: Ipso facto - he was regarded as a land-owning freeholder, but no land records have been found for Andrew in Randolph County records). 1790 - US census of Rowan County NC, page 177, for Andrew Garren: 5 Males under age 16 - (believed to be James, Daniel, Andrew Jr, Joseph, and John Sr); 1 Males over the age of 16 - (assumed to be Andrew Garren Sr); 2 Females - (One is assumed to be Andrew&amp;rsquo;s wife and one is likely to be either an undocumented daughter or the wife of James Garren). After the 1790 census, three sons and one daughter were born to Andrew Garren Sr: David Garren Sr (born 14 June 1796), William Garren (born c.1797), Absalom Garren (born c.1800) and Sarah "Sallie" Garren (born 1805). c.1791-1802 - Mrs Ethel Stroupe, 30322 Benecia Ave, Laguna Niguel CA 92677, states in a letter that "Jacob, Andrew, and James Garren sold a tract of land together to a Mr Henry Shoaf Sr, who lived near Lexington... This deed is missing from court house records." Mrs Stroupe has been trying to get a copy of the deed from a Shoaf descendant. 22 Mar 1791 - Dr A B Pruitt, Abstracts of Land Entrys, Rowan County, NC, Dec 1778 - Feb 1795 citing Rowan County, NC Land Entry #3255: Andrew Garron enters 50 acres in Rowan County on Hamby&amp;rsquo;s Creek, joining David Woodson and Thomas Summers. (ABP Note Two entries #3255 - this is the second one - #3255A). (Didn&amp;rsquo;t find the NC grant record for this property). Nov 1792 - Dr John Scott Davenport citing Rowan County, NC court minutes: Andrew Garron vs Benj Waller for damages. Garren awarded &amp;pound;3 and costs. 27 Nov 1792 - Dr John Scott Davenport citing Rowan County, NC Deed Book 13:452: State of North Carolina to Andrew Garron, 31 acres on waters of Hambies Creek, bounding his homestead lot, David Woodson and Thomas Summers. (Didn&amp;rsquo;t find a record for the Land Entry). 31 Dec 1792 - McCubbins Collection citing Rowan County, NC Deed Book 13:368: Isaac Roberts, of Pennethen (sic-Pendleton) County, South Carolina, to Andrew Garron, of Rowan County NC, for &amp;pound;100, 187 acres on waters of Hambies Creek, bounding Thomas Summers, Samuel Parks, Richard Seers and Lewis Beard. /s/ Isaac X Roberts. Wit: Jonathan X Helton and Amos X Roberts and proved by Helton in Nov 1793. (Source of property - McCubbins Collection citing Rowan County, NC Deed Book 12:678: On 18 May 1789?, State of North Carolina (#1782) to Isaac Roberts, 187 acres on Hambys Creek next to Thomas Summers, Samuel Parker, Richard Seers and Lewis Beard). Andrew Garren Sr sold the property 2 May 1793 to James Garron, his son. 2 May 1793 - McCubbins Collection citing Rowan County, NC Deed Book 13:604: Andrew Garron to James Garron, his son, both of Rowan Co, NC, for &amp;pound;135, 187 acres (on waters of Hambies Creek), bounding Thomas Summers, Samuel Parks, Richard Seers and Lewis Beard. /s/ Andrew Garron (In German). Wit: Arthur Parr and Jacob Pfautz (In German) and acknowledged in May 1794. (This has led to speculation that Andrew Garren's son, James Garren, must have been twenty-one years of age at the time; however, it is very doubtful that Andrew Garren Sr had children born prior to about 1778). 5 Aug 1793 - Dr A B Pruitt, Abstracts of Land Entrys, Rowan County NC, Dec 1778 - Feb 1795 citing Rowan County, NC Land Entry #125: Andrew Garron enters 50 acres in Rowan County on waters of Uwara (Uwharrie) River bordering Widow Roads, Valentine Beard and Jacob Co&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</line></content></metadataxml>
