<metadataxml>
<line>
COPIED FROM A GENFORUM POST BY RICK BROWN http://genforum.genealogy.com/reynolds/messages/9001.html
</line><line>
Rick Brown copied/pasted various posts about John Reynolds (c. 1710-1756) of Wilkes County, North Carolina. Due to Tillman's book, several genealogies had listed the parents of John as Robert/Grace Clark Reynolds of VA. Professional genealogists have ruled out this possibility due to the paper trail of wills and successive land ownership that show there was no male heir of Robert's line at the time our John was clearly living. SEE HIS POSTS BELOW THE FOLLOWING NOTE.by jrland
</line><line>
[There is an exact DNA match on the 33-marker yDNA test posted on ancestry.com between descendents of John Francis Reynolds (c. 1734-1803), likely son of John (c. 1710-1756) and descendents of James Reynolds (1625-1700) of Rhode Island. This line should be explored as the more probable ancestral line of John of Wilkes County, NC.]
</line><line>
FROM RICK BROWN
Will the real John Reynolds Please Stand Up??
Who are the Parents of John Reynolds Born 5 October 1710.?
Where there two John Reynolds born on or near the same day or born a month apart.??
Parents Robert and Grace Clark Reynolds have been sourced .
Parents Richard and Elizabeth Sharpe have been sourced.
Both Robert and Richard seem to have died around the same time frame 1709 and 1711 respectively.
And Left Wills or Estates.
Stories of families Taking in children of other family Member was a common practice.
Also Note.?? If John Reynolds Was born to Grace Clark Reynolds, Robert Reynolds Could not have been the Father ~OR~ his birth date could not have been in 1710. Rod Stucker has referenced an estate of Robert Reynolds being signed on 5 July 1709 (Doc 186b) a whole year and five months before John Reynolds was born on 5 October 1710, so how could Robert have been the father.??
Do not discount the idea that Grace Clark Reynolds Was the Mother though she may have been.
It has been said Grace Clark Reynolds died shortly after John Reynolds was born.
Who would have taken John in .. an uncle or cousin?
A brother to the Robert Reynolds or cousin maybe.
Also did John Reynolds (of 1710) have two wives.??
The clues may be found in the estate records of John Reynolds of Rowan County . Which John Francis took over at the death of his Father.
Please read carefully....

From The History Of Wilkes County, Family History 951 pg. 398 (North Carolina)
Reynolds
The pioneer John Reynolds, who settled on the Yadkin River and Mulberry Creek when this area of North Carolina was still Bladen County, was descended from one Christopher Reynolds, who was born 1530 in Kent County, England. John Reynolds was born 5 October 1710 in Norfolk County, Va., married Sarah Rebecca Jenkins and died in 1756 in then Rowan County (later Wilkes). He was the son of Robert and Grace Clark Reynolds of Norfolk County . Eight Children were born to John and Rebecca:
(1) John Francis ~ married Anne Blackburn
(2) Eliza ~ married a ___ Sidden
(3) Sarah ~ married Joseph Porter Lived in Wilkes County, NC
(4) Elisha ~ b. April 1755, died Dec 13 1836 Mulberry Creek married August 5, 1786 Judith Eddins , Revolutionary War Soldier
(5) James ~ died 1809 on Fishing Creek Married 1st Mary Baker 2nd Feb 20 1806 Mrs. Jane (Hickerson) Miller.
(6) William ~ Married April 4 1781 Martha Cook.
(7) Jenkins ~ b. 1753 d, Sept 1779 married Martha Sale
(8) Charles

Story Continues with John Francis Reynolds being the administrator of his Father John Reynolds Estate.
~ Family Sources (from the book)

Where did this family really come from .??
Parents of John Reynolds 1710,va. were
Robert Reynolds and Grace Clark.
Robert died before John was born and Grace died when
John was a year or two yrs. old (by will) (~mention of Will?? whose will?)
A John Reynolds in Surry co. NC 1718
which I believe to be a uncle of young John
prob. took him to raise after mother Grace
died, and took him to NC from Norfolk co. VA.
give me a thought about this. ~ Lou Ellen Nelson
...........Though the county location for the 1636 patent for Nicholas Reynolds was not provided in the original description of the patent, the description does list Lawnes Creek which corresponds with the northern boundary for the Upper Parish in Isle of Wight County as described above. There was another estate record for Robert Reynolds on 5 Jul 1709 which was signed by Grace Reynolds (Doc.#186b).
~ Rod Stucker
(Had Robert Reynolds died before 5 July 1709..??
In Tillman’s book is referenced sons of Robert Reynolds and Grace Clark ~ Nicholas Reynolds and John Reynolds. excerpt following ) ~ Rick Brown
Are you sure about the reference to Surry County, NC in 1718? Not only did Surry County, NC not exist then, but I seriously doubt that there were any white people there at that time. Surry County NC is substantially farther inland than where the Granville proprietors had let anybody buy land as of 1718, if I'm remembering my history right. I'll bet you really mean Surry county, Virginia, which is just a stone's throw from Norfolk.
~Barry Wood
In the will of Robert or Grace Reynolds, is there mention of any chattel property? My ancestors were from Norfolk and they carried the Reynolds name, although they are not Reynolds by blood. They were chattel property. I'm trying to find evidence of ownership in wills. Is there mention of a Flora, Rose, Norton or Mary Ann in the will?
~ Hollis Gentry

.....have info on Reynolds line:
John's Father:
Richard Reynolds, b. 1641 Isle of Wight Co., Va. and d. 27 Jul 1711 Newport Parish, Va.
Data from his will.
m. 1669 Elizabeth Sharpe.
Issue: Richard (my ancestor) b. 1669,
Christopher b. 1670,
Sharpe who d. 8 Jul 1754,
Elizabeth who m. unknown
Lewis,
and John, b. 5 Oct 1710. It is a compilation of the descendants of Christopher Reynolds b. 1530 in County Kent, England.
The book states that Christopher settled in London (England) and engaged in commerce and trade. His grandson, also named Christopher, was the first of the family to settle in America.
~ Ruth

Tillman lists the following family in paragraph 1484.
1 Robert Reynolds b: 1685 in Norfolk County, Virginia d: 1710 in Surry County, Virginia
.. +Grace Clark b: 1689 in Norfolk County, Virginia d: 1711

......... 2 Nicholas Reynolds b: 1706 in Norfolk County, Virginia
......... 2 Mary Reynolds b: 1708 in Norfolk County, Virginia
......... 2 John Reynolds b: October 05, 1710 in Norfolk County, Virginia

However, he has two listings for John Reynolds. Brittain
athensga@ix.netcom.com
</line><line>

</line><line>
COPIED FROM A GENFORUM POST BY BOB BAIRD, http://genforum.genealogy.com/reynolds/messages/10072.html
</line><line>
Doyle, I'm a genealogist in NC. I have no interest in this family, but I'll try to address a few of these items.

There is no "History of Wilkes County". I think you are referring the the "Hertitage of Wilkes County", a vanity book in which the genealogical sketches were contributed by modern-day descendants, and which are completely unverified. That is, what it says about Reynolds is someone's compiled family history. They are no more trustworthy than any other source which does not give specific citatins. I would also note that this book postdates Col. Tillman's book, which probably influenced it.

The Reynolds who died in Isle of Wight in 1707 and 1712, respectively, were both named Richard. Neither of them was a Robert. In fact, there is no mention whatsoever of a Robert Reynolds in Isle of Wight records until after 1750. The earliest Robert Reynolds appearing in Isle of Wight records is a great-great-grandson of Christopher Reynolds the immigrant, born perhaps in the 1720s.

I think you are actually looking at a Reynolds family of Surry County, Virginia who appear to be entirely unrelated to those of Isle of Wight.

Nicholas Reynolds, an early resident of Surry County, had a son named Robert. Robert Reynolds, aged "60 or thereabouts" left a will dated and proved in early 1703. [Surry DB 5, p267] The will named wife Elizabeth, daughters Susannah, Elizabeth, and (by inference) Agnes, and one son, Robert. It left the land "that my son Robert Reynolds now lives on" to his grandson Nicholas Reynolds, son of Robert Reynolds the younger. Nicholas to have the land at age 21. Elizabeth, the widow and executrix, presented the inventory and appraisal.

Robert Reynolds Jr. is in the tithables through the last year they are available, 1703, with no sons aged 16. So Nicholas Reynolds, his son, was not only under 21 in 1703 but under 16 as well.

The Surry court records show administration of the son Robert Reynolds (who died intestate) was granted to the widow Grace Reynolds on 3 May 1709. [Surry Orders 1691-1713, p322] She presented the inventory and appraisal on 5 July [Ibid, p324] which is recorded in DB 5, p414.

Grace Reynolds herself died two years later, leaving a nuncupative will on 15 Dec 1711, proved 19 Dec 1711, naming daughter Mary Reynolds, and "kinswomen" Hester Brown, Mary Clark, and Susannah Clark. [DB 6, p90] The will was proved by Elizabeth Reynolds (her mother-in-law) and Sampson Clark. The will did not name an executor, so Sampson Clark, declaring himself to be her "next of kin", was appointed her administrator [Orders, p383]. On 17 Dec 1712, Sampson Clark presented an accounting of her estate showing a payment for "funeral charges of herself and son." [DB 6, p130]

It would appear from the above that the son Nicholas predeceased his mother, as he is not named in her will. The record below confirms this.

On 15 July 1728 Mary Waller and her husband Thomas Waller sold 150 acres described as (a) all the land that Robert Reynolds owned at his death and (b) belonging to Mary Waller by estate of inheritance. [DB 7, p833]

This would appear to be Mary Reynolds, daughter of Robert Reynolds Jr. and Grace (Clark?) Reynolds. Under the succession laws of this time, the only way she could have inherited the land of an intestate father is as the only living descendant. (That is, if her brother Nicholas were dead without heirs of his own.) Likewise, the only way she could have inherited the land of her grandfather was if she was the only living descendant of his son Robert. Ergo, Nicholas, the only male descendant of the two Robert Reynolds, died as a minor without children.

There are zero mentions of anyone named Reynolds in Surry County after 1712, with the exception of that 1728 deed. It appears from all prior records that Robert Reynolds Jr. was the last living male descendant of Nicholas Reynolds.

Tillman's book is clearly based on insufficient research. Nicholas and Mary are correct as children of that Robert Reynolds, though both were clearly born earlier than the dates he gives. But he has Robert's ancestry wrong, and there is no John in this family.

It also looks to me like the "Heritage of Wilkes County" is a red herring contributed by someone who didn't do enough research.

Since you can show that John Reynolds was not a descendant of either the Isle of Wight or the Surry County Reynolds, the only clue left is to look elsewher, perhaps at Norfolk County. There were Reynolds families there, but I do not know anything about them.
</line>
</metadataxml>
