USE CAUTION and VERIFY. These notes contain a discussion of the father of John Reynolds (1710-1756) of Wilkes County NC and tentatively suggest Francis Reynolds Jr (1689-1768) of Rhode Island as his father. Comments welcome. UPDATED 7/30/15

<metadataxml>
<line>
This connection is purely a GUESS and should be used with CAUTION.
</line><line>
~To date, no one has offered convincing proof of the father of John Reynolds who died in 1756 in the area of Wilkes County, North Carolina and there appears to be two lines of thought.
</line><line>
(1) It has been suggested by many family trees that John's father was Robert Reynolds of VA. This Robert married Grace Clark. The rub here is that, according to a professional genealogist posting on genforum, Robert Reynolds had died by 1709 and the dates on some of the records relating to his death were well before the date of birth given for John. John's date of birth has been given as 5 October 1710. (Some papers indicated as much as a 15 month difference so John could not be a son of Robert if these papers prove to be linked correctly as listed by the professional genealogist.)
</line><line>
(2) Several DNA sites have indicated an exact DNA match between known descendents of the John Reynolds family of Wilkes County NC and the James Reynolds family of Rhode Island. For this reason, this tree has tentatively linked Francis Reynolds Jr of RI as the father of John Reynolds of Wilkes County NC, but this needs much more study and documentation. USE CAUTION and VERIFY ALL INFORMATION given here. [UPDATE: 7/30/15, there is also a DNA match between descendants of Gardiner Reynolds (1760-1821 of Exeter RI) and descendants of John Francis Reynolds (1734-1803, Wilkes Co NC), likely son of John Reynolds (1710-1756, Wilkes Co NC. This makes two nearly identical matches between the Reynolds line of Wilkes Co NC and the Reynolds families of RI. Now that ancestry.com no longer compares Y-DNA matches, one should look at the Reynolds project on familytreedna.com to see this group of DNA matches.)
</line><line>
If this turns out to be the real ANCESTRAL LINE of John Reynolds (1710-1756) of Wilkes County, NC, the line from John back to James Reynolds (1625-1700) would be:
</line><line>
-John Reynolds (1710-1756) of Wilkes County NC who married Sarah Rebecca Jenkins
</line><line>
-Francis Reynolds Jr. (1689-1768) of Rhode Island who married ???
</line><line>
-Francis Reynolds Sr. (1662-1722) of Rhode Island who married Elizabeth Greene
</line><line>
-James Reynolds (1625-1700) of Rhode Island who married Deborah ??
</line><line>
[There is convincing proof that Francis Reynolds Jr. had a son named John who was born about 1709 according to a book on the descendents of James and Deborah Reynolds of RI. I have not seen this book but quote someone who has a copy. The first edition was compiled and edited by Stephen C Roth (1985?) and appears as 2 volumes plus 486 pages of appendix and index. Published in Salem, MA by Higginson Book Company. Cost was about $260.]
</line><line>
[UPDATE 2/9/13: The following was copied from google books: JOHN REYNOLDS (Francis, Francis, Jaies) was born in North Kingstown 1709. He iarried in North Kingstown Apr. 9, 1729 REBECCA JENKINS born in East Greenwich Jan. 18, 1711, daughter of Zachariah and Abiah (Allen) Jenkins. This was in "Reynolds Family Association Centennial Collection : 100 years of historical and genealogical material collected by the Reynolds Family Association" published in 1992 by the association. It appears as a snippet of p. 496. Note the "m" scanned as an "i."]
</line><line>
The DESCENDENT LINE of John Reynolds (1710-1756) of Bladen/Rowan/Wilkes County, NC is as follows:
</line><line>
-John Reynolds (1710-1756) who married Sarah Rebecca Jenkins
</line><line>
-John Francis "Frank" Reynolds (1734-1803) who married Anne Blackburn
</line><line>
-John Ashley Reynolds Sr (1774-1859) who married Nancy Cleveland
</line><line>
-Larkin C Reynolds (1799-1872, Greenville SC) who married Elizabeth Malin
</line><line>
This descendency line on down through current generations has been verified with historical documents. (Wills, estate records, census records, land records, etc. with many attached to this public tree)
</line><line>
The weak link is the connection of John (1710-1756) to possible father Francis Jr. (1689-1768) of RI. The exact DNA match between known descendents of the two lines and the book stating that Francis Jr had a son named John who was born about 1709 are the only two items of evidence I've run across; however I haven't run across any proof that would connect John to Robert Reynolds of VA. I would greatly appreciate anyone's thoughts about this connection. Please contact me via the ancestry.com email system if you have corrections or additional thoughts about this line. Thanks. jrland
</line><line>

</line><line>

</line>
</metadataxml>
